Question-Can technology integration in American classrooms adequately or correctly be expressed as a hierarchy?
As a teacher in one of those American classrooms I believe that there truly is a hierarchy when it comes to technology integration. As I was listening to Dr. Newberry's podcast on technology integration I couldn't help but think about what my own school looks like with respect to this hierarchy. Although Dr. Newberry stated that the hierarchy was in many ways outdated, much of the information that he presented was still very relevant.
We have teachers which probably fit in at every level of the hierachy. We have a few teachers who use technology quite a bit, and we have other teachers who use technology very little. To what extent the teachers that use a lot of technology level is still undetermined. I think many of these teachers use it as a teaching tool, such as video cameras, smart boards, computers, and LCD projectors. Currently, there is no real dialogue as to the use of technology. As far as my own use I feel that I am still between using it as a teacher tool for management and correspondence and a non-integrated use on students. This is not to say that I haven't had exposure to the higher levels. I have some exposure to those areas. It is my goal to eventually reach those higher levels on a more consistent basis.
As a leader in educational technology I would establish more of a dialogue, so that teachers can start to share their ideas with other teachers. It does us no good if we're all in the dark about technology and its uses.
Alternative Hierarchy
Level 1: Full Integration-student directed/teacher facilitated-challenges students to be creative, critical thinkers, and innovative/challenges their intellect and motivation to express evidence of the learning process.
Level 2: Partial Integration-partial student directed/teacher directed-still focuses on being creative, critical thinkers, and such, but still more teacher directed. Students still demonstrate knowledge, find and organize information, and produce a object or product related to the learning process.
Level 3: No Integration-Totally teacher driven-drill/practice-used as a tool on students/rather than for them. No student input.
Level 4: No Integration/Teacher managed/no student involvement. Technology is strictly used for management.
Level 5: No Integration/Non-augemented use of technology for learning. Teacher controlled.
